Chicks

We talked to my sister, Mimi, earlier this year about trading some chicks and chicken stuff for help with a remodel that we are planning later. Her husband has done some framing work. She agreed and we took some stuff down to her, but had to wait to order the chicks. We were going to get some up here and take them down to her, but my smart husband pointed out that we could probably just call down there and buy her some. So, I called to IFA and they were able to take my credit card over the phone and Mimi went and picked them up. After we went through all of that, I realized that I was really looking forward to having babies in my house. Then, I remembered that we told Nathan's sister and brother-in-law that we would give them extras from Mimi's chickens. I didn't need any more reason to get some tiny chicks. We had them for about 4 days at our house before we took them to their new home. My kids are still talking about how we need to get more chicks.

Day 1 - introducing them to the watererand the feeder. The night before we took them "home" we had a little going away party. Owen got to pick up a chick by himself for the first time.Owen saying goodbye.Zoey saying goodbye. Don't worry, we didn't let her hold it for long. Just long enough to take these few pictures and we didn't let her hold them in between. All she had done before was to pet it while I held it. On this night, she kept trying to shove all the wings and legs together to get it to fit into her little fist.Jo saying goodbye. She's an old pro by now.
All the kids saying goodbye to their "chickie friends."Having too much fun!!
I think I've figured out a way for us to have babies every year, still have laying hens, and rotate our flock. I'm excited because I think that all types of animals are good for kids in different ways. It was good for me to see the kids with the baby chicks and remember that babies teach a whole new set of lessons than adult chicks. We were sad to see them go, but we're excited to not be the only crazy ones with chickens in either family anymore (although Nathan's sister is convinced she's going to be the sane one in the family with chickens, we'll see.)
